Yash Chopra has had his share of flops in his career. One of them being this Sridevi film.
Yash Chopra has experienced his share of highs and lows. While he enjoyed the success of films like Deewar and Kabhi Kabhie, he has also been impacted by the flops of his life. The director had once revealed that the failure of a few movies did take a toll on him. One of them was Sridevi’s 1991 film Lamhe. The film marked Yash Chopra and Sridevi’s second collaboration after the blockbuster success of Chandni. Lamhe starred Sridevi in a double role and she shared the screen with Anil Kapoor.
While the filmmaker was hoping to recreate the magic of Chandni, Lamhe did not fair well at the box office. The film was one of the shocking flops of that year. Years after the film’s failure, Yash was discussing the failure of Dharmputra when he mentioned Lamhe in the same breath.
“I was terribly disheartened (by the failure of Dharmputra) but then I was as disheartened by the failure of Lamhe also, which was romantic. I couldn’t work for months,” he told Hindustan Times in 2007. However, he noted that these films witnessed the highest DVD sales. “Perhaps my failures were ahead of their times. Otherwise how can you explain the fact that the highest sales of my DVDs have been of Dharmputra, Silsila and Lamhe?” he added.
For the unversed, Dharmputra was released in 1961. The film was Yash’s second film in his career. He had return to the big screen just two years after his successful directorial debut, Dhool Ka Phool. Dharmputra starred Shashi Kapoor and Mala Sinha in the lead. The film did not do well.
Yash Chopra’s last film was in 2012. The director had helmed Jab Tak Hai Jaan and was a Posthumous release. The film released a month after his sudden death. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.
