Patients suffering from chronic sinusitis need to take multiple treatments.
Sinus or Sinusitis is not an overtly threatening disease but can cause pain and discomfort. It can be quite an ordeal to deal with. Sinusitis is inflammation of the paranasal sinuses due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections or allergic reactions. People of any age group are susceptible to this disease and it can be caused by pollution, allergies or extreme cold. Dr Pooja Harsha shared with Tamil some remedies to treat this ailment.
Dr Pooja works as an ENT, and Head & Neck Consultant in Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. She said that sinus can be diagnosed with a CT scan or a nose endoscopy. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and steroid nasal sprays are some of the methods by which sinus can be cured. Oral steroids and immunotherapy are some of the other treatments for curing acute sinusitis.
According to Dr Pooja, patients suffering from chronic sinus ailment need to take multiple treatments. “Surgery is the best option for those whose sinus problems do not improve with medical treatment. The most common surgery is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.”
In Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, any blockage which obstructs sinus ventilation and the infective tissue causing the sinus infection is removed. This surgery also provides a sufficient passage through the nose for free breathing. Dr Pooja Harsha also advises other treatments to cure sinus. According to her, adequate sleep is essential. She says that having enough sleep also helps in strengthening memory and other neurological functions.
Sinus patients usually suffer from sleep obstructions and such conditions affect the oxygen level required for brain functioning in the long run. Early detection of sinus and timely consultation from ENT specialists can help individuals improve their quality of life.
Home remedies like apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, honey, detox baths, and steam can also be used to cure sinuses. Apple cider vinegar can reduce symptoms of allergies too.
