New BMW sportbike to be called G 310 RR, bookings now open

BMW has confirmed the name of its upcoming little sportbike, and also opened bookings for the G 310 RR.

BMW Motorrad India has been aggressively teasing its upcoming Apache RR310-based sportbike, and the latest information from the manufacturer confirms that it will carry the G 310 RR nametag that we expected it to. The company has also announced that bookings are open for the upcoming sportbike.

In the images above, you see the left side fairing, which carries the full nametag. The name on the fairing is also followed by the word ‘Race’, which could be BMW’s denotation for this particular white, blue and red colour scheme on this particular bike.

Guessing this name was quite a straightforward affair, since it fits quite neatly into the box of BMW’s rather systematic nomenclature. G is the first alphabet it uses for its single-cylinder models (R is for boxer twins, F is almost always for parallel-twins, S is for inline-fours, and so on), the 310 part of it obviously pertains to the displacement, and RR is the suffix BMW uses for fully-faired sportbikes, like you see on the S 1000 RR as well.

The overall graphics and colours on the G 310 RR are quite similar to those on the S 1000 RR, but the bodywork will be almost identical to the TVS Apache RR310. There do, however, seem to be some slight differences. In newly released pictures seen today, we observe slight tweaks to the headlight and front fairing, but the basic shape of the side fairings seems to be almost identical. Another difference is that the BMW will use conventional brake rotors, in contrast to the petal-type discs seen on the Apache.

The BMW G 310 RR is scheduled to launch on July 15, and it’s quite likely that BMW will continue to periodically tease the bike until then. So, stay tuned for more updates.
