Karnataka open to partnering with Meta for cybersafety: State IT Minister Priyank Kharge

Karnataka is looking to explore partnerships with Meta for digital cyber safety especially with respect to women and children, state IT minister Priyank Kharge told reporters on the sidelines of Meta’s Digital Suraksha Summit here on Saturday.

We are trying to see how to prevent youngsters from falling prey to loan apps etc, he said. In his keynote address, he said, if the Big Tech giant wants to partner with Karnataka for skilling, awareness, empowering small women businesses, and experimenting something for education on Meta, he’s game.

“I have the appetite, Meta should have the right intent,” he said. “The minister for technology in the UK is also in charge of tackling misinformation and fake news. He said he is talking to Meta to tackle misinformation and disinformation online,” Kharge said.

Cybercrime in Karnataka

Of the total cases registered with the police last year in Karnataka, over 20% were related to cybercrime, the minister revealed. The state lost Rs 1 crore to cyber fraud every day in 2022, he said. “Last year, we lost Rs 363 crore and it is expected to double this year,” he said.

“We are only able to get back 12% of the money lost in cybercrime cases reported. Several cases go unreported too,” he said. This isn’t restricted to the state capital, which is the world’s fourth largest technology cluster, but cities like Mysuru also lost Rs 15 crore, he said, while the neighbouring Mandya district lost Rs 14 crore.

“These are small tier-2 towns. There are villages that are falling prey to cyber frauds. This isn’t a phenomenon restricted to big or urban cities, and is not restricted to white-collar jobs,” he said.

Natasha Jog, head of public policy at Instagram, in her presentation to school students and principals at the summit, explained that it was working to provide a safer environment for teenagers on its app and has introduced more than 30 tools in the last year to support teenagers and families.

Sandhya Devanathan, vice president of Meta India, said India is home to the company’s largest communities on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram and that it is also where the company launches many of its products first.

“India is where we tested our first ever end-to-end shopping experience with Jio Mart last year on WhatsApp. You can buy Bengaluru Metro tickets on WhatsApp, which was piloted here first in the country. Among global tests and launches, there’s one for broadcast channels on Facebook going on here, where the ICC community is also present,” she said.
