Netflix thrilled fans with the long awaited premiere of Laapataa Ladies, a film directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan. The streaming giant shared the OTT release date alongside the poster on April 25 and dropped the movie at midnight. Adapted from Biplab Goswami’s award winning novel, the movie features Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Ravi Kisan in leading roles. Despite a lukewarm response at the box office, Rao’s film garnered praise from audiences and critics for its engaging plot, performances and humour. The movie transports viewers back to rural India of 2001, where two brides get exchanged during a train journey. As the story progresses, viewers are taken on a journey filled with twists and turns, as they search for the real bride.

Following her directorial debut with the Aamir Khan starrer Dhobi Ghat in 2010, the recent movie marks Rao’s second directorial project. While the Indian audience showered praise on the movie during its theatrical release, the film last year received standing ovation during its premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Announcing the OTT release on Instagram, Aamir Khan Productions wrote, “Yaatrigan kripya dhyaan dein Laapataa Ladies jald hi milengi Netflix par.”

In an earlier interview with First Post, Biplab Goswami speaking about how he collaborated with Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao for Laapataa Ladies said, “There were about 4,000 scripts in a contest and mine bagged the second prize. I came to know that Aamir Khan loved the script right on the day when he was giving me the prize. Everyone knows he’s really meticulous about the content he makes, and I was hopeful he would call me someday to discuss what I wrote. He finally called me and said he would produce it and Kiran Rao would direct “Laapataa Ladies or Lost Ladies.”

Speaking about the cast, Goswami added, “It was Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s plan to decide whom to cast and the ensemble has turned out to be absolutely fantastic. I was also writing the script thinking about a real and true backdrop. And I felt the cast fitted perfectly with the story of Laapataa Ladies.”

Despite its slow start, Laapataa Ladies gained momentum thanks to positive reviews and strong word of mouth, due to which the movie received a boost in box office numbers. The film crossed Rs 20.85 crore mark in India and earned Rs 2.75 crore overseas, but it deserved even greater success. According to Sacnilk reports, the movie’s worldwide box office collections was Rs 23.6 crore.
