With Covid cases on the decline, IT majors encourage employees to return

Mumbai/ Pune An increasing number of IT companies are bringing back employees back to work however continuing with a hybrid model. Infosys is implementing a “phased return to office” and encouraging employees to attend office in person for a day or two per week. Infosys expects a hybrid model in which approximately 40 – 50 % of employees are likely to work from the office on any given day, said Richard Lobo, Executive Vice President, Head HR, Infosys.

For now, Infosys continues to have 96% of its workforce operating remotely and are looking at a gradual increase over the next 3-4 months depending on the course of the pandemic. However, the company is of the view that the future will be hybrid with a mix of employees coming in daily, some working fully remote and the rest using a mix of both modes.

“To start, we are encouraging our managers and leaders to attend office in person for a day or two per week. We are also encouraging team meetings and huddles as well as other office activities. This is being done with safety screening and other precautions to ensure a healthy workplace for everyone,” Lobo told ET.

CP Gurnani, CEO, Tech Mahindra said that at present about 18% of its employees were working from the office. “We have asked them to work from the office at least two days a week from April 1,” he told ET.

TCS expects people to work from home in their “depute” locations even as it expects remote working to continue, according to internal emails sent to its associates. This is part of the company’s 25-by-25 long term vision where only a fourth of the employee base is expected to report on premise. “An important part of the journey to the 25/25 model is to first bring people back to physical offices and gradually transition into the hybrid work model,” Milind Lakkad, CHRO, TCS had said.

Wipro has asked employees – managers and above – to return by March 3 — two days in a week. “Beginning March 3, fully vaccinated employees who are managers and above will have the option to return to work from our India campuses, twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. We will continue to extend the work from home arrangement for other employees,” it had stated earlier.
