NATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY 2023: Every year, December 14 is commemorated as National Energy Conservation Day. The day is marked to demonstrate how far nations have come in terms of energy conservation and efficiency. The day also aims to promote awareness regarding the value of energy conservation for current and future generations. It is vital to spend energy wisely in order to maximise an environmentally friendly livelihood.

The ultimate objective of energy conservation is to achieve sustainable energy usage, ensuring that current needs are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is distinct from the concept of ‘energy efficiency,’ which involves employing technologies and processes that require less energy to perform the same functions, optimising resource utilization.

National Energy Conservation Day 2023: History

Since 1991, the National Energy Conservation Day has been organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), which is part of the Union Ministry of Power. BEE contributes to the development and implementation of plans and programmes to decrease excessive energy consumption. Further, in 2001, the committee signed the Energy Conservation Act to evaluate various methods to lessen the impact of climate change through holistic development.

National Energy Conservation Day 2023: Significance

The goal of National Energy Conservation Day is to raise public awareness about the necessity of energy efficiency and conservation. BEE recognises and encourages industry efforts to reduce energy use by bestowing National Energy Conservation Awards. Industry, buildings, transportation, institutions, and appliances are among the 17 industries and 5 categories recognised by the awards.

The annual energy conservation awards recognise innovation and achievements in energy conservation by industries and manufacturers, as well as raise awareness. They also play a significant role in India’s response to global warming through energy savings. The awards also acknowledge their dedication to energy savings and efficiency. The plan has encouraged industry and other businesses to implement energy-saving solutions.
