Nanda was the best friend of famous actress, Waheeda Rehman. Nanda’s pairing with actor Shashi Kapoor was a huge success. Even after gaining so much name and fame, she struggled in her personal life. Nanda Karnataki made her acting debut in 1948 with the film Mandir. She worked from 1948 to 1956 as a child artist. Nanda got her breakthrough after her paternal uncle, the renowned film producer-director V Shantaram, cast her in a successful brother-sister saga, Toofan Aur Diya. Since then, she has never looked back.
As per reports, the actress’ career spanned over 30 years. She came into the limelight after appearing in the romantic drama film, Jab Jab Phool Khile alongside Shashi Kapoor. Their pair was loved by the viewers. The film became a blockbuster at the box office and was No 2 in the top ten grossing films at Box Office India for 1965.
Nanda is also known for her performances in movies like Chhoti Bahen, Dhool Ka Phool, Bhabhi, Kala Bazar, Kanoon, Hum Dono, Gumnaam, Ittefaq, The Train, and Prem Rog. She was last seen in the 1983-film Mazdoor, backed by BR Chopra and directed by his son, Ravi Chopra. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Nanda, Raj Babbar, Suresh Oberoi, Rati Agnihotri, Padmini Kolhapure, Iftekhar, Madan Puri, and Johnny Walker in pivotal roles.
According to a report from 1965, while filming Jab Jab Phool Khile, director Suraj Prakash recalled that a Maharashtrian lieutenant colonel fell in love with Nanda and had asked him to forward his marriage proposal to her mother. In the end, nothing came of it.
Later in 1992, Nanda got engaged to director Manmohan Desai at the urging of her best friend, Waheeda Rehman. Manmohan Desai, unfortunately died soon after, by falling from the terrace. Nanda remained single thereafter. She passed away in Mumbai on March 25, 2014, at her Versova residence, at the age of 75.
