The 1994 superhit film Mohra, directed by Rajiv Rai, is still considered to have opened a new dimension in Bollywood. The film shattered many box office records soon after it was released. Now, even after almost 30 years, the film is enjoyed by many cinema enthusiasts.
The high-octane action thriller became a box-office success due to the gripping storyline, suspense, romance, and captivating music. But, do you know that the film was the 9th highest-grossing film of the year? Well, the film was a commercial success. Made on a budget as low as around Rs 3.25 crores, the film minted close to Rs 22.64 crore at the box office.
Mohra featured an interesting ensemble cast that included Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal among a few other prominent actors. Directed by Rajiv Rai, the movie’s intriguing plot revolves around a journalist named Roma (Raveena Tandon) and her boss Mr Jindal (Naseeruddin Shah). They help Vishal (Akshay Kumar) to get out of jail only to make him release that he is being used as a pawn (Mohra).
The menacing personality of Shah in the film caught the most attention whereas Suniel Shetty’s performance as a macho man is still appreciated. At the time of the release, both Akshay and Suniel were gradually making their name in Bollywood. While Shetty made his debut in Balwaan (1992), Akshay was fast garnering fans for his martial arts moves with Saugandh (1992) and Khiladi (1992).
The X-factor of Mohra was its album which had many hit songs. Composed by Viju Shah, the album reportedly sold more than 80 million copies at a time. Be it Tip Tip Barsa Paani or the disco number Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast and not to forget Na Kajre Ki Dhar every song became iconic.
