The show Byomkesh Bakshi comprises 32 episodes, divided into two seasons.

The name of Byomkesh Bakshi is known to many in India. The Bengali sleuth has been presented in various forms, be it TV Shows or films. Byomkesh Bakshi was first presented by Satyajit Ray in the 1960s when he directed the National Award-winning Bengali movie Chiriyakhana (The Zoo) featuring Uttam Kumar as Byomkesh Bakshi.

The detective was back again in the 90s. This time it was for television as Basu Chatterjee took the helm of directing it for DD National.

The show Byomkesh Bakshi comprises 32 episodes, divided into two seasons, and drew inspiration from Sharadindu Bandopadhyay’s character Byomkesh. It featured actors like Rajit Kapoor, KK Raina, and Sukanya Kulkarni with Kapoor playing the role of Byomkesh.

Byomkesh Bakshi, a Bengali detective, embarked on quests for the truth, often partnering with his friend Ajit Banerjee. His unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth superseded conventional legal and investigative methods, leading him to devise his unique approaches. The series featured memorable episodes such as Satyaanveshi, Raaste Ka Kanta, Seemant Heera, Makdi Ka Ras, Lal Neelam, Bhoot, and Agnibaan among others.

Basu Chatterjee’s adaptation of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s novel, with each episode dedicated to a chapter, garnered widespread acclaim and popularity. Viewers were so engrossed in the show that they remained glued to their seats throughout the 40-minute episodes. Basu himself engaged in solving the cases alongside Byomkesh. Notably, he crafted the stories Chidiyaghar and Primitive Enemy into two captivating episodes.

During the recent lockdown, Byomkesh Bakshi made a comeback on DD National, reigniting its popularity. Rajit Kapoor gained immense fame through this show when it was aired first and people even began to see him as a detective. Born on 27 August 1963, Rajit is a renowned figure in the film industry. Following the show’s success, he secured opportunities to work on several notable projects.

Producer-director Dibakar Banerjee conceived the idea of creating a Bollywood feature film franchise centred around the iconic character. He presented this concept to Aditya Chopra, the head of Yash Raj Films, and thus, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy was born. Sushant Singh Rajput, who was signed by the production house, was chosen to portray the protagonist.
