Reportedly, after the death of her mother, their relationship improved. As per media reports, when her father was being honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, the award was presented by Rekha and they briefly shared an emotional moment.
At the age of 16, she quit her education and entered the film industry due to some financial conditions in the household. She has acted in several movies like Raampur Ka Lakshman, Do Anjaane, Aap Ki Khatir, Ghar, Khubsoorat, and Silsila. Umrao Jaan is considered to be one of the best works in her career.
