The Tayron is expected to launch in India by early 2025; will be assembled from CKD kits.
Volkswagen is working on a new global three-row SUV called the Tayron, and, as we’ve exclusively reported before, it will be brought to India in 2025. The Tayron will be based on the upcoming third-generation VW Tiguan/Skoda Kodiaq platform.

However, this is not the first time the carmaker is using this moniker as it sells a left-hand drive, 5-seater SUV based on the Tiguan AllSpace exclusively in China. There’s even a coupe derivative of the same called the Tayron X.

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, Karlheinz Hell, head of engineering for Volkswagen’s mid-to-full-size models said, “We will extend our existing SUV line-up globally with the second-generation Tayron, which is already under development and will go on sale by the middle of the decade.”
The second-gen Tayron is being engineered for sale in all of Volkswagen’s key markets such as Europe and North America, and, unlike the current model that’s produced in China, the new Tayron will be manufactured at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany. The Tayron is essentially meant to be a spiritual successor to the seven-seat Tiguan AllSpace, which will be retired after its current generation.
The Tayron will continue with both SUV and coupe body styles, but unlike the current model that mirrors the Tiguan AllSpace in terms of dimensions and the regular Tiguan in terms of overall design, the new Tayron will not only receive its own unique styling but will also be much larger than the outgoing model, thereby allowing an additional row of seats.
“The increase in dimensions for the next Tiguan will also be reflected on the next Tayron,” Hell said, adding, “We want to keep a similar differentiation in size between the two.”
It will sit atop the upgraded version of VW’s MQB platform, as used by the next-gen Passat and Tiguan, incorporating extensive suspension upgrades to boost refinement and dynamic performance. The SUV will likely be offered in both 5- and 7-seater configurations, while the coupe version is likely to be offered only in 5-seater guise.

Internationally, the Tayron will be offered with the choice of either a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol or turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine – both offering 48-volt mild-hybrid properties and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.
Volkswagen confirmed it will also offer the choice of two petrol plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) in two states of tune – 204hp and 272hp – together with an electric-only range of over 100km and capable of DC fast charging. All powertrains are being engineered to comply with stricter EU7 emission standards “from the beginning”.
For India, Volkswagen is likely to stick with the 2.0-litre petrol engine, but it remains to be seen if the PHEV variants are also brought here.

An India launch of the Tayron could be on the cards by early 2025 as it will be brought in as CKD kits, which takes time to assemble. The Tiguan Allspace, on the other hand, was offered in India in 2020 as a CBU.
