VinFast India, VF 5, VF e34 India launch, CBU import -DellyRanks

VinFast India is likely to apply for the new EV policy and use the CBU route before production starts in Tamil Nadu in 2025.

VinFast, the Vietnamese EV maker, is likely to enter the Indian market with two completely built import models – a compact SUV and a crossover hatchback – in the second half of FY2025. Sources say the EV specialist will be applying for the new EV policy announced by the Government of India and avail the benefits of importing a couple of models.

  1. VinFast VF 5 likely to rival Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400
  2. VF e34 could compete with Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta EV
  3. Local assembly to start in 2025 in Tamil Nadu

People in the know say that among its six EV-strong portfolio it has globally, the VF e34 and VF 5 EVs are two potential models, which may hit the roads in less than a year.

Despite being imported, they are likely to be priced aggressively. These models will challenge the likes of Tata Motors, MG Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra, who intend to build their own portfolio of models in the coming 12 months.

VinFast VF 5: potential Nexon EV rival

Also sold as the VF 5 Plus, this small electric SUV is a little smaller than the Tata Nexon EV (3,967×1,723×1,578mm compared to 3,994×1,811×1,616mm), and comes with a 37.23kWh battery pack that has an NEDC-certified range of 326km. The compact EV has a 136hp, 135Nm electric motor driving the front wheels, which is said to propel this 1,360kg car to 100kph in 10.9 seconds.

As mentioned above, the VinFast VF 5 is expected to be priced competitively, which could mean a price point close to the Nexon EV’s Rs 14.49 lakh-19.29 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The version sold abroad is equipped with a 7.0-inch digital driver display, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment, six airbags and ADAS tech.

VinFast VF e34: could take on Curvv EV

VinFast’s VF e34 is a high-riding hatchback with SUV design cues – the 4.3-metre crossover could be a rival to the upcoming Tata Curvv EV, the Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti’s eVX. The VF e34 is powered by a 41.9kWh battery pack that powers a 150hp, 242Nm electric motor, and has an NEDC range of 318.6km. Its interior sports a larger 10-inch touchscreen and looks more premium with its dual-tone beige and black finish. Expect the VinFast VF e34 to be priced in the Rs 25 lakh-30 lakh region at launch.

VinFast India production plan

While the initial plan is to import it as a CBU, it will slowly be localised. The battery is likely to be imported from the Indonesia plant, once the localisation starts in India. The company is currently defining its go to market strategy and the dealership footprint. To a query sent by Autocar, Pham Sanh Chau, CEO, VinFast India did not share any details but said, VinFast is committed to providing Indian customers with a wide range of world-class EV products.

“In addition, VinFast’s flexible sales will empower our customers with greater accessibility. VinFast India is presently engaging with Indian dealer partners for establishing a brand presence and retail network across the country. The detailed business plan will be announced at the appropriate time,” added Chau.

Apart from serving the growing Indian market, VinFast is also likely to capitalise on our country’s strong manufacturing expertise to ship vehicles globally. The plant site spans across 400 acres within the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial estate, and is close to the port to facilitate efficient exports. The site is scheduled to start rolling out locally made models from 2025 onwards.
