Twitter’s Kayvon Beykpour speaks out after being ‘asked’ to leave by CEO Parag Agrawal

New Delhi: Kayvon Beykpour, the social media company’s head of consumer product, said in a tweet on Thursday that he had been ‘asked’ to leave by CEO Parag Agrawal, while he was on paternity leave.

He said Agrawal wanted to ‘take the team in a new direction’.

The development comes on the back of Tesla founder Elon Musk trying to pull off a
$44 billion Twitter takeover.

Beykpour founded Periscope, a live streaming platform, in 2014 which was
bought out by Twitter a year later.

In 2020,
Twitter shut down Periscope due to declining usage over the past couple of years and high supporting costs.

“Parag asked me to leave after letting me know that he wants to take the team in a different direction,” Beykpour tweeted. “While I’m disappointed, I take solace in a few things: I am INSANELY proud of what our collective team achieved over the last few years, and my own contribution to this journey.”

While Twitter employees fear if Musk will scale back the site’s vast content monitoring system, Beykpour lauded his team for their work on new goods and safety features.

“Twitter’s DAU has grown by over 87% since Q2 2018 and our team has shipped bold and exciting new evolutions to the product (like Spaces, Communities, Topics, Creator tools, Safety controls) at a much much faster pace than anytime over the last decade, he said in the thread.

Following Musk’s Twitter buyout, general manager for revenue Bruce Falck was also abruptly fired.

Jay Sullivan
will take over as Twitter’s head of product and interim head of revenue.
