‘True visionary’: Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, other Silicon Valley tech chiefs on Intel cofounder Gordon Moore


Gordon Moore, the cofounder and former chairman of Intel Corp, died Friday aged 94. A pioneer in the semiconductor industry whose “Moore’s Law” predicted a steady rise in computing power for decades, passed away surrounded by family at his home in Hawaii, Intel and Moore’s family philanthropic foundation said.


Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger in a tweet said that Moore “leaves behind a legacy that changed the lives of every person on the planet.”

“Gordon Moore once said, “What can be done, can be outdone.” As stewards of his law, Intel will work relentlessly to exponentially outdo what he & Robert Noyce set out to do. He leaves behind a legacy that changed the lives of every person on the planet. His memory will live on,” Gelsinger tweeted.

Other tech chiefs too paid their tributes to Moore.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, tweeted, “The world lost a giant in Gordon Moore, who was one of Silicon Valley’s founding fathers and a true visionary who helped pave the way for the technological revolution. All of us who followed owe him a debt of gratitude. May he rest in peace.”

Google parent Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai said, Moore’s “vision inspired so many of us to pursue technology, was an inspiration to me”.

Garry Tan, president at Silicon Valley-based Y Combinator, said in a series of tweets that Gordon Moore’s decision to buy back the 4004 CPU laid the foundation for Intel’s domination in the microprocessor industry and changed the course of computing history.

Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff said that he was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Moore.

“He was a true giant in our industry, defining the power of the semiconductor, and yet remained one of the most humble and kind individuals I have ever met. May the peace that surpasses all understanding be with Betty and the entire Moore family during this difficult time. Sending my heartfelt condolences and love,” Benioff tweeted.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the world “lost a true pioneer n inspirational visionary”.
