The Toyota Hilux is based on similar underpinnings as the Fortuner and Innova, and will share a lot of parts with them.
The lifestyle pickup truck segment is currently limited to just one vehicle in India – the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. But that’s about to change soon as Toyota is all geared up for the launch of the Hilux pickup in the coming weeks. Unofficial bookings for the Toyota Hilux have also commenced ahead of its launch in January.
This, of course, is a niche segment in India and the Isuzu will have a direct rival for the first time, ever since it went on sale in 2016. That said, the Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Fortuner and Innova Crysta and as such, will be positioned a notch above the Isuzu D-max. Here we have put together the technical specifications of both trucks to see which comes out on top, on paper.
Toyota Hilux vs Isuzu D-Max V-Cross – dimensions

Toyota Hilux | Isuzu D-Max V-Cross | |

Wheel-size | 18-inch | 18-inch |
Both the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max are rather large vehicles, measuring nearly 5.3 meters in length. However, it is the Toyota Hilux that is longer by 30mm. And while the Isuzu D-Max is just 5mm wider than the Hilux, the latter has the advantage in terms of height by 25mm.Â
If you thought the size of the Isuzu D-Max was already intimidating, the Hilux takes it up a notch. However, despite being shorter in length, the Isuzu D-Max has a 10mm longer wheelbase. Both pickup trucks ride on a set of 18-inch alloy wheels.

Although Toyota hasn’t confirmed what engines the Hilux will be offered with here, we expect it to be powered by the Fortuner’s 2.8-litre diesel engine. This engine produces 204hp and 420Nm of peak torque (500Nm with the automatic gearbox), although exact gearbox details are yet to be confirmed. This engine in the Fortuner is offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes, and we expect the same for the Hilux as well. Similarly, we expect Toyota to offer both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations on the Hilux, just as it does with the Fortuner.
In comparison, the Isuzu D-Max is powered by a much smaller 150hp, 360Nm, 1.9-litre diesel engine, which is a considerable 41hp and 60Nm (140Nm in case of the automatic) down on the Hilux. Isuzu also offers both 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes along with 4×4 and 4×2 drive configurations on the D-Max V-Cross. Toyota could also offer the Innova Crsyta’s 150hp, 2.4-litre diesel engine on the Hilux, in a bid to position it at an aggressive price point in the market.

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross is currently priced between Rs 21.32 lakh-25.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Meanwhile, the Toyota Hilux is expected to priced between Rs 25 lakh-30 lakh.
