Toyota has finally released the first details of its diesel mild-hybrid powertrain that will be seen on duty on the Hilux initially. Toyota Hilux MHEV: powertrain details

In an official release, Toyota has said that the Hilux mild hybrid, likely to be called Hilux MHEV upon debut, will be introduced in many markets, including South Africa and Australia, next year. Toyota South Africa confirmed in March this year that Hilux and Fortuner will get mild-hybrid tech from 2024.

The 2.8-litre diesel engine that does duty on the Hilux and the Fortuner will get 48V mild-hybrid tech and will likely be available with a 6-speed automatic only. This powertrain will be around 10 percent more fuel efficient than its counterpart without the mild-hybrid tech.

In the Australian press release, the brand has avoided using the term “hybrid”, but what’s known is that the Hilux mild-hybrid set-up will include a 48V battery, a small electric motor generator and a few other components. Toyota claims the addition of this tech “will not have any impact on the Hilux’s off-road and towing capabilities.” Toyota will initially introduce the diesel mild-hybrid powertrain only on the top trims, and then later on to the entire line-up.

Toyota Hilux GR-S MHEV prototype tested at WRC Kenya

Toyota conducted trials of the new Hilux MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) during the seventh round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Kenya. The Hilux MHEV concept was driven by four-time WRC champion and former Toyota world title winner Juha Kankkunen from Finland, with co-driver Jimmi Gathu, a renowned local Kenyan media personality and actor.
