Kanakalatha is among the most popular actresses in the Malayalam film industry. She is known for her charm and versatile performances. According to reports, she has worked in more than 360 films in South industry and has garnered a lot of love from fans. Her career lasted almost four decades, but lately she has been away from the limelight. Recently, it was found that Kanakalatha has been grappling with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. This news was recently revealed by her sister during an interview. She also revealed that Kanakalatha now exhibits behaviour that is similar to that of a three-year-old child and requires constant care. In the interview, Kanakalatha’s sister Vijayamma revealed that she has been her care-giver for the past few years. She added that the symptoms of Parkinson’s and dementia began in 2021, and they aggravated during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said during the initial days she didn’t pay much attention to the symptoms, but later Kanakalatha started to become forgetful. Then she was also diagnosed with amnesia.

Vijayamma also added that from October 22 to November 5, 2022, Kanakalatha found herself in the ICU, with her condition deteriorating rapidly. Her everyday tasks like eating and drinking also require assistance. She even forgets to drink water and eat food, which often forces Kanakalatha to survive on liquid food. The situation has become so dire that she now requires diapers. Kanakalatha’s skin has become pale, and her long hair had to be cut short too.

She got divorced from her former husband in 2005. The couple has no children. Since then, she has been living alone. After her situation worsened, she was shifted to her brother’s family home.

Vijayamma further said that Kanakalatha only seems to regain some sense when she sits in front of a television to watch movies. This touching connection to her passion for cinema serves as a reminder of her enduring love for the art form.
