Season 6 of The Crown is scheduled to be released in two parts.

Netflix’s The Crown’s director Peter Morgan responds to harsh criticism surrounding his show. The upcoming season 6 will be the popular series’s final instalment.

Peter Morgan, the creator of the well-known television series, The Crown, has expressed his response to criticisms directed at his historical fiction show in a recent interview. The criticisms, which have come in advance of the release of Season 6, include comments from prominent figures such as legendary actor Judi Dench and former UK Prime Minister John Major. The criticism reportedly surrounds a leaked scene in which Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) has a conversation with an imaginary Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) in the cabin of the royal plane as he accompanies her dead body from Paris to London.

Even before this reportedly leaked scene from the final season of the show, Judi Dench had previously voiced her concerns about the Netflix series, describing it as “crude sensationalism” in a published letter, reports Variety. She reportedly expressed the view that while many viewers may recognise The Crown as a brilliantly crafted but fictionalised account of historical events, there is a risk that a significant portion of the audience, especially those outside the UK, might consider its version of history to be entirely accurate. Her article, titled ‘The Crown is crude and cruel, says Dame Judi Dench,’ was reportedly published before Season 5 was released.

In response to these remarks, in an interview with Variety, director Peter Morgan stated, “All the criticism about The Crown’s attitude to the royals comes in anticipation of the show coming out. The minute it’s out and people look at it – whether it’s Judi Dench or John Major, they instantly fall silent. And I think they probably feel rather stupid.”

In the same interview, Peter Morgan, 60, also expressed that it is challenging to discuss his show within the United Kingdom. “It’s just that I don’t like talking about it. I don’t think it’s possible to have a sensible conversation about ‘The Crown’ in the United Kingdom,” he told Variety.

As for The Crown itself, the series focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The final instalment, Season 6, is scheduled to be released in two parts, with the first part premiering on November 16 and the second part on December 14. Notably, all three actresses who have portrayed Queen Elizabeth II across the five seasons, including Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton, are expected to make appearances in Season 6.
