Spotify tests ‘Your Offline Mix’ feature. Is it different from YouTube?

Spotify is currently experimenting with a new functionality that allows users to enjoy their preferred music even in situations where they don’t have access to a cellular network or Wi-Fi. This feature, known as “Your Offline Mix,” essentially provides a playlist that can be accessed by users when they are offline.

In certain scenarios such as mountainous areas or during flights, internet connectivity may be completely unavailable, leaving users unable to connect. Many users typically plan ahead for such situations by downloading music in advance.

However, selecting specific songs to download for offline listening can be a bothersome task. Spotify‘s latest feature aims to address this issue by providing a convenient solution for these circumstances.

According to a screenshot shared by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek on Twitter, the new feature will automatically store “a collection of recently played songs for moments when you’re in a great mood but have limited connectivity.”

No specific timeline for the release of the feature was provided by the CEO. It should be mentioned that the Swedish audio streaming app, Spotify, already allows users to download playlists or albums for offline listening. This feature is also beneficial for conserving data in certain situations. It has been reported that Spotify has been working on this feature since 2020.

To recall, Spotify Technology SA has said on Monday that it has decided to lay off 200 employees in its podcast division. The 200 employees represent about 2 per cent of the audio streamer’s worldwide workforce.

In a bid to diversify its revenue streams beyond music streaming, the company has pursued an assertive expansion strategy, investing over $1 billion in podcasts and attracting renowned figures like Joe Rogan to its platform.

“We are expanding our partnership efforts with leading podcasters from across the globe with a tailored approach optimized for each show and creator,” Spotify said.

Back in January, Spotify had announced that it was planning to cut down its workforce by 6 per cent.
