Spotify may soon launch HiFi streaming plan, Reddit post suggests

Swedish audio streaming app Spotify could finally be launching a HiFi streaming plan, something it had promised more than a year ago, according to a Reddit post.

Reddit user u/nearlymind shared a screenshot from the app which asked if they would like to switch to Spotify Platinum in the next 30 days for $19.99.

The user said they were asked to fill the survey after they cancelled their Spotify Premium subscription in favour of Apple Music.

Spotify had announced in February 2021 that it would launch a HiFi plan in select markets. HiFi or high fidelity audio provides lossless music to the listener. Apple Music already provides HiFi audio to its users at no extra cost.

Users who commented on the original post by u/nearlymind did not seem too happy with Spotify’s price tag of almost $20 for its ‘Platinum’ plan.

‘Yeah, no, $20 for something every other competitor offers for free, that’s a scam’, said a Reddit user u/Discombobulated-Gap2.

Another comment from a person who goes by the username u/lihkatahtmai read, “I have been a Spotify user for many years now but recently got myself some good headphones worthy of listening to lossless music. So I cancelled my Spotify premium and started the Apple Music trial. I am hearing the difference and intend to stay on AM as long as Spotify comes up with HiFi.”

According to the screenshot, Spotify intends to offer services like headphone tuning, library-pro, audio-insights, studio sound and playlist pro, along with high resolution music, in its $19.99 a month Platinum plan.

The music-streaming service currently has 400 million active monthly users. About 180 million of these are paid subscribers.

India is a crucial market for Spotify as it
contributed to its 74 million new monthly active users in 2021. The company offers low-cost plans in the Indian market, starting as low as Rs 7 a day.
