Snapdeal’s launch on ONDC next month to cover more than 2,500 cities and towns

Ecommerce platform Snapdeal will debut on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) next month, a press release from the platform said.

The company signed the onboarding agreement to join the platform earlier this month. Teams on both sides are in advanced stages of completing the required technical integration to enable a pan-India launch by mid-August.

Snapdeal will provide pan-India access on ONDC. At the time of launch, more than 2,500 cities and towns across the country will be enabled for access and more cities and towns will be added as per ONDC network expansion during the year. Various third-party logistics providers who work with Snapdeal will provide both inter and intra-city logistics. Snapdeal may also explore using the on-network logistics options available on the ONDC platform.

It will launch on ONDC in three key categories: fashion, home, and beauty and personal care.

The fashion category will include apparel, footwear and accessories for kids, women and men. The accessories will include all fast-selling products like wallets, belts, sunglasses and watches. The home category will have cookware, storage and serving collections, and kitchen tools.

The home category will also have mass-use products like bedsheets, towels, cushions, curtains, clocks, bed and bath linen and more. The personal care category will include skin care, hair care and oral care products and deodorants, while the beauty category will debut with a range of make-up products including lipsticks, nail polish and eye make-up.

“The launch on ONDC ties up with Snapdeal’s focus on connecting small and medium sellers with a large and growing online market, especially amongst buyers living outside India’s metro cities,” the release said.

Snapdeal draws more than 86% of its orders from outside the metro cities, with more than 72% of the orders flowing from buyers living in smaller cities and towns. With a focus on the value segment, more than 95% of the products sold on Snapdeal are priced below Rs 1000, the company said, in its press note.

Snapdeal’s launch on ONDC will be supported by a network of sellers from North (Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Agra, Ludhiana), West (Surat, Rajkot, Mumbai), South (Tirupur, Chennai, Bengaluru) and East (Kolkata, Guwahati) amongst others.

“The increasing digitization of India’s retail is a transformative opportunity that can greatly benefit the sellers, buyers and other stakeholders. ONDC’s efforts will catalyze this growth in the right direction and will help create an inclusive, enabling, open-access-based digital commerce ecosystem. Snapdeal looks forward to a strong partnership with ONDC in this path-breaking endeavor,” said Himanshu Chakrawarti, president, Snapdeal.

“Snapdeal’s on-boarding on ONDC will accelerate our efforts to reach a wider audience of buyers and sellers, and also cover larger parts of the country. We look forward to leveraging Snapdeal’s long-standing expertise in serving India’s online users. We also look forward to working closely with them to build an online ecosystem that truly serves the needs of the country”, said T Koshy, chief executive officer (CEO), ONDC.

As per a recent RedSeer report, the number of online buyers from India’s tier II and smaller cities and towns, which account for more than 80% of the country’s population, will triple in five years from roughly 78 million in 2021 to nearly 256 million by 2026.

“The purchase decisions of these buyers are directed towards finding good quality products in their preferred price range. They spend a significant amount of time discovering, evaluating and comparing products, discounts, offers and promotional events before making purchases. The launch of ONDC will enhance visibility and access for sellers serving this vast and fast-growing value e-commerce market,” Snapdeal said in its statement.
