The Scream franchise has seen its fair share of twists and turns. Despite the rollercoaster ride of production delays, creative shake-ups and cast changes, the highly anticipated Scream 7 is steadily making its way toward reality. The iconic slasher series first terrified audiences in the 90s under the direction of Wes Craven, who helmed the first four instalments. After a decade-long break, the franchise was revived in 2022 and its most recent entry, Scream VI (2023), shattered box office records, outperforming even the original.

Scream 7 is officially in the works, targeting a 2026 release, if all goes according to plan. Here’s a deep dive into what’s in store for Ghostface’s next chapter.

Release Date

As reported by Variety, the official release date for Scream 7 was revealed in October 2024. If there are no further hiccups, the movie is set to slash its way onto the big screen on February 27, 2026.

Plot

So far, details about the story are scarce and no official synopsis has been released. However, one thing is certain Ghostface will be back for more bloodshed.

Neve Campbell, who is reprising her role as the franchise’s beloved final girl, Sidney Prescott, gave fans a hint at what’s to come. “We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board,” Campbell revealed to Entertainment Tonight in July 2024.

With Sidney back in the spotlight, fans can expect a nostalgic yet fresh take on the horror series.

Cast

Casting for Scream 7 has been a wild ride, with both familiar faces returning and new ones joining the blood-soaked franchise. Jasmin Savoy Brown will reprise her role as Mindy Meeks-Martin, as reported by Variety.

Mason Gooding is also back as Chad Meeks-Martin, Mindy’s brother. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott, marking her grand comeback after skipping Scream 6 due to salary disputes. Courteney Cox is expected to return as Gale Weathers, despite initially stating she hadn’t signed on. Variety later confirmed her involvement.

But the biggest shocker? Matthew Lillard is making a comeback. Fans remember him as Stu Macher, one of the original Ghostfaces from 1996. Given that Stu was seemingly killed by Sidney, his return raises intriguing questions. Lillard himself teased his involvement by sharing a video of him writing one of Stu’s iconic lines before Deadline confirmed his casting.

Another surprise addition? Scott Foley, who played Roman Bridger, the mastermind behind Scream 3. Since Roman was killed, it’s unclear how he fits into the new story, but Deadline has confirmed his return.

According to Teen Vogue, joining the franchise for the first time are Isabel May (Alexa & Katie) as Sidney’s daughter, Joel McHale (Community) as Sidney’s husband, Mark Evans. Fans will also see McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Asa Germann (The Boys) and Mark Consuelos (Riverdale) in a secret role.

Meanwhile, two major departures have made headlines. Melissa Barrera was fired in November 2023 following her pro-Palestine social media posts. Speaking to The Independent a year later, she described it as “the darkest and hardest year of my life.”

Additionally, Jenna Ortega exited the film the same month, citing scheduling conflicts with Wednesday Season 2.

Scream 7 Director

The original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is stepping up to direct Scream 7, his first time in the director’s chair for the franchise. Initially, Christopher Landon was set to direct, but he left the project in December 2023. Announcing his departure on social media, he wrote: “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honoured to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

With Williamson at the helm, fans can expect a return to the franchise’s roots.

Trailer For Scream 7

As of now, no official teaser or trailer has been released. Production was initially set to start in December 2024 and in January 2025, Williamson confirmed via Instagram that filming was underway in Atlanta.

With the cameras rolling, a first look could be just around the corner. Fans of the franchise can’t wait for more updates as Scream 7 inches closer to its terrifying return.
