Renamed Speed Twin 900 and Scrambler 900 to be launched next year

No mechanical changes, however, will accompany this renaming move.

Triumph Motorcycles will streamline its model range, bringing its smaller neo-retro offerings in line with the bigger ones, using different capacities in the badges to distinguish the models. The Street Twin and Street Scrambler are the models in question which will be renamed to the Speed Twin 900 and the Scrambler 900, respectively.

The changes were first filed in Australia, and now have been filed in the USA as well, which suggests that this won’t be a single region decision and is likely to apply to the line up across the world.

What’s in a name?

Essentially, nothing is going to be changed on these models except the badging on the side panels. The information we have gleaned from paperwork submitted to the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) as well as Australia’s Road Vehicle Regulator say: “This variation submission is to simply change the commercial name (Marketing Designation) from ‘Street Twin’ to ‘Speed Twin 900’… only the side panels change.”

The same applies to the Street Scrambler which shall be renamed Scrambler 900 akin to its bigger sibling the Scrambler 1200.

New clothes for the two

Triumph most likely will offer new paint schemes when they launch these renamed models. The changes to these models are for the MY2023, which most likely means they will be launched in the latter stages of this year.

Speed Triple 765 on the cards?

The changes to these models have opened the door for questions regarding the ‘Street Triple’ designation as well. Launched in 2007, the Street Triple was the first model in Triumph’s line-up to feature the ‘Street’ nameplate to identify a smaller model, helping distinguish it from the Speed Triple 1050 of the era.

It was a runaway success for Triumph, combining the engine from the erstwhile Daytona 675 supersport with upright ergonomics – essentially, one of the first naked bikes to arrive on the scene.

However, since the Street Triple’s larger-engined sibling is now called the Speed Triple 1200, instead of just Speed Triple, it is likely that Street Triple might be renamed as well to take on the Speed Triple 765 moniker.

Do you think we’ll see a Speed Triple 765 from Triumph sometime soon? Let us know in the comments section below.
