Railway launches portal for funding start-ups


The centre has launched a portal to implement the Indian Railway Innovation Policy. This portal will accept applications from start-ups that develop cost-effective, implementable, scalable solutions and functional prototypes for the national transporter.


The Indian Railway intends to invest up to Rs 1.5 crore as seed money in these start-ups. An official presentation said that the grant can be doubled to up to Rs 3 crore at the scaling up stage for wider proliferation. This support from the Indian Railways will be in the form of 50% capital grant, assured market, scale and ecosystem.

Speaking to journalists, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the start-ups will need to provide solutions that address at least one of the eleven identified Problem Areas.

These problem areas are Broken Rail Detection System, Rail Stress Monitoring System, Headway Improvement System for suburban section interoperable with Indian Railways, and Automation of Track Inspection Activities among others.

The Design of superior Elastomeric Pad (EM Pad) for Heavy Haul freight Wagons, Development of on-line Condition Monitoring System for traction motors of 3-phase Electric Locomotives, Light-weight wagon for transporting commodities like Salt, Development of analytical tool by using digital data for improving passenger services, and Track Cleaning Machine have also been listed as problem areas.

The need of an App for post-training revision & self-service refresher courses, and Use of Remote Sensing,

and GIS for bridge inspection also needs to be addressed. According to the Railways, more Problems Statements have been collected, which are under scrutiny and shall be included in this list subsequently.
