Director Mani Ratnam and actor Vikram are served with legal notice by a lawyer, alleging the history of Cholas seems to be misrepresented in Ponniyin Selvan: 1. The teaser of the film released days ago, created a buzz amongst the fans and expectations have risen for the drama, a lavish creation under the direction of well-known director Mani Ratnam.
The legal notice stated that the historical details of Cholas had been overlooked from ‘Ponniyin Selvan’. The film is an exquisite retelling of the history of the Chola monarchs who ruled Thanjavur (a district in Tamil Nadu), and it is based on the popular novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ written by writer ‘Amarar Kalki’.
According to reports, many have given up attempting to make this film, even though Ratnam has long wanted to make it. Moreover, in the notice sent by lawyer Selvam from Korukkupetta of Chennai, claimed that the historical details were concealed in ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, since Cholas don’t have ‘Naamam’ (a vertical traditional mark applied on the forehead), while actor Vikram, who is playing the role of ‘Adithya Karikalan’ in the film, was seen with the Naamam on his forehead.
In a similar vein, the lawyer demanded a special screening for him prior to the film’s release in theatres, to analyze whether they have suppressed the historical facts. Further, the lawyer’s notice threatens legal action if the film is released without first screening it to them. The warning has also been addressed to renowned actors like Vikram and the film’s producer Subaskaran in addition to director Mani Ratnam.
Vikram, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Sarathkumar, Sobitha, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Parthiban and others star in this opulent historical drama. Fans have responded enthusiastically to the film’s recently released teaser. ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is made in two parts, and the first part of the film is scheduled to release on September 30 this year in five languages and actor Vikram has dubbed in five languages for his character in the film.
