Pankaj Tripathi spoke about what makes people think of him as a great actor and why he never asks for retakes.
National Award-winning actor Pankaj Tripathi is touted by many as one of the greatest performers of all time. Pankaj is not only lauded for his powerful on-screen presence and his stellar acting prowess but also for his simplicity and groundedness off-screen. As such, he is regarded as a “great actor” by audiences and members of the film industry alike. However, Pankaj has a different explanation for why people think he’s a great actor.
Speaking to Anupama Chopra, Pankaj said, “Kahi baat ho rahi thi toh ek mahila ne poocha ki aapko kab laga ki aap ek great actor hain? Maine kaha mujhe abhi bhi nahi malum hai ki main ek great actor hoon (A woman once asked me when I realised that I am a great actor. I said I still don’t know that I’m a great actor).”
He said, “Kyuki surrounding main itna average kaam ho raha hai aas paas ki thoda sa bhi above average aapko great lagne lagta hai. But main acting ko utna hi lightly leta hoon, koi jeewan maran ka prashn nahi hai (The work being done around us is so average that if anyone performs slightly above average, we think it is great. However, I take acting very lightly, it’s not a life or death situation).”
Pankaj continued, “Abhi ka truth hai, aaj ke din meri jitni samajh hai, imaandaari poori partoonga. Imaandaari main ek paise ki kami nahi rahegi, par mujhe pata hai ki ab bhai ho gaya. Ab iske beyond mere se kuch nahi ho sakta hai. Issi liye main kabhi retakes nahi maangta, kabhi monitor nahi dekhta (Right now, in all honesty and loyalty towards my work, what I undertand is that I am at a level which I cannot go beyond. That’s why I don’t ask for retakes or look at the monitor).”
Pankaj was recently seen as the protagonist in OMG 2. He also received another National Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the Kriti Sanon-led film Mimi.
