The world of Indian folk music mourns the loss of one of its most beloved voices, as Sharda Sinha, the legendary singer celebrated for her Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi songs, has passed away. Fondly known as the “Bihar Kokila” (Nightingale of Bihar), Sinha’s influence on Indian folk music brought the traditional sounds of Bihar to national and international audiences. She had been battling multiple myeloma since 2018 and was admitted to the Oncology Medical Department at AIIMS for nearly two weeks. Her condition worsened on Monday, leading to her being placed on ventilator support.

Anshuman Sinha, Sharda Sinha’s son, shared the heartbreaking news of her passing on her official Facebook page. Posting a photo of the beloved folk singer, he wrote in the caption, “Your prayers and love will always remain with mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to her. Mother is no longer with us in physical form.”

Born on October 1, 1952, in Samastipur, Bihar, Sharda Sinha was deeply rooted in folk culture, which inspired her journey into regional music. After earning a Master’s degree in music, she initially taught music before her career as a performer took flight. Over the years, she became a prominent figure in preserving and popularizing Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi folk music, delivering authentic performances that resonated with millions.

Her renditions of folk classics like “Kahe Toh Se Sajna,” “Paniya Ke Jahaj Se Paltaniya Ban Ahiya Ho Rama,” and “Sasu Ji Se Nanad Ji Laayi Devar Babu” became nationwide hits. Sinha’s music not only celebrated Bihar’s cultural richness but also introduced the beauty of Bhojpuri and Maithili traditions to audiences worldwide, making her a household name and a symbol of pride for Bihar.

Sharda Sinha’s influence was especially felt during Chhath Puja, where her songs became an integral part of the festival’s celebration. Tracks like “Hey Chhathi Maiya” and “Ho Dina Nath” became timeless anthems of devotion, cherished by generations and capturing the essence of the festival.

Throughout her career, Sharda Sinha received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 2018 and the Padma Shri in 1991, honoring her significant contributions to preserving Indian folk music. Her work was celebrated across the country, establishing her legacy as one of India’s most esteemed folk artists.

Known for her humility and simplicity, Sinha remained deeply connected to her roots, often seen in traditional attire that symbolized her pride in her heritage. Her stage presence was more than just captivating—it was a bridge that connected audiences to the heart of rural Bihar.
