The Kerala Story and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani are also being considered for India’s official entry to Oscars 2024.

Reportedly, a 17-member committee, headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli has been formed which is currently processing films.

India has begun the process to find its official entry to the Oscars 2024. If a recent report is to be belived, films like Balagam, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kerala Story, Kapil Sharma’s Zwigato and Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani among other films are being considered for India’s official entry to the Academy Awards.

As reported by Hindustan Times, a 17-member committee, headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli has been formed which is currently processing films through screenings in Chennai. Reportedly, this committee has received over 22 entries from all over India.

“Some of the films, which have been sent to the Film Federation of India for Oscar selection, include names such as Anant Mahadevan’s The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi), and Dasara (Telugu),” a source cited by the news portal claimed.

“The list might have additions such as Vaalvi (Marathi), Gadar 2 (Hindi), Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose (Hindi), and Baap Lyok (Marathi). We have received their application, but are waiting for the fees,” the insider added.

Decision regarding India’s official entry to Oscars 2024 is likely to be announced later this month. “The screening started yesterday, and would take a week as there is a huge pool of films to be watched and then they will decide. We can expect an announcement about the official entry from India next week,” the source concluded.

Earlier this year, India bagged two Oscars. Naatu Naatu song from SS Rajamouli’s RRR won the Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards, whereas Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers also won the Best Documentary (Short Subject). Reportedly, this has led to a “new confidence” among the filmmakers and therefore they are looking at “a wide range of commercial, regional as well as serious cinema from the country”.

Last year, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film, Last Film Show (Chhello Show) was named as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards.
