Ola electric scooter scam: Thousands of people duped; 20 arrested

The scam involved the creation of a fake Ola Electric website and people impersonating Ola employees.

The Delhi Police has held 20 people in connection with an elaborate online scam centred around the Ola electric scooter. This scam has allegedly duped over 1,000 people around India. The accused come from various parts of the country, including Patna, Bengaluru and Gurugram, according to reports.

The scam was pulled off through the creation of a fake Ola Electric website that was targeted at people looking to buy the e-scooter. Through this site, unwitting folks would first pay Rs 499 to book the scooter, and then would receive calls from the accused pretending to be Ola employees. These calls led to payments in the tens of thousands in the name of down payments, delivery charges, insurance and more.

The scam came to light after an FIR was registered by the Delhi Cyber Police on the basis of a complaint that was received on October 7.

Until recently, Ola Electric scooters were sold solely via an online model and the company only recently decided to open physical experience centres.
