‘Nobody Thought I Would Stand Up’: Aashiqui Star Anu Aggarwal On Her Horrific Accident –

Anu said that when she was in a coma, the question was not about her recovery, but whether she would survive and even if she did, Anu would be in a paralysed state.

Anu Aggarwal, who rose to overnight stardom in 1990 with Mahesh Bhatt’s film Aashiqui, defied industry norms dominated by the belief that ‘fair is beautiful.’ Transitioning from the limelight to pursue the study of yoga, her life took an unexpected turn in 1999 when she faced a near-fatal accident. Driving early one rainy morning, her car overturned three times, crashing near Mumbai’s Chowpatty area, leaving Anu Aggarwal in a 29-day coma.

In a candid interview with Times Of India, Anu Aggarwal revealed that, during her coma, the question wasn’t just about recovery but whether she would survive. Even if she did, the possibility of paralysis loomed. Miraculously awakening after nearly a month, Anu found herself bedridden, half-body paralysed, and grappling with severe trauma. Despite bleak predictions, she embraced a positive outlook, defying expectations.

Anu Aggarwal, post-accident, followed spirituality. In 2001, she embraced Sanyas opting for renunciation and keeping her head shaved. Living humbly with a bag in hand, Anu delved into the study of the mind and human psychology.

In 2006, when Anu Aggarwal returned to Mumbai and started meeting people. She used to greet the press stationed outside her house with humility.

“After the accident, I had forgotten how to apply lipstick too. Soon people started to post my ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures. My no-makeup look pictures went viral. I was so shocked to see so much happening around me,” she said.

Anu Aggarwal is quite active on social media where she often keeps inspiring her fans and followers. She also runs a yoga school now.
