It is marked in the memory of those who lost their lives in the 1984 Bhopal Gas tragedy that took place on December 2 and 3. It is estimated that at least 4,000 people died when a pesticide plant by American chemical company Union Carbide’s pesticide plant began leaking the toxic methyl isocyanate gas into a populated area in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Subsequently, more than 15,000 people were gravely affected by the side effects of inhaling the noxious gas. The day is aimed to make people aware about the dangerous consequences of pollution.
