‘My Days Started By Listening To Kalabhavan’s Jokes’: Suraj Venjaramoodu On Mimicry Artist’s Death –


Kalabhavan acted in over 150 Malayalam films.


Kalabhavan Haneef made his acting debut with the 1991 film Cheppu Kilukkana Changathi.

Malayalam cinema plunged into grief as actor and mimicry artist Kalabhavan Haneef passed away. He was 63 and breathed his last on Thursday at Kochi. Various actors have expressed their condolences on his demise, including actor Suraj Venjaramoodu. Suraj penned a note on Instagram in Kalabhavan’s memory.

He wrote, “A loved one has bid farewell. A person who has always been an inspiration in my artistic career….all his comedy programs with an amazing sense of humour were once memorised.” Suraj added that Kalabhavan told him and his other friends every moment he saw and observed in his life.

According to Suraj, Kalabhavan entertained everyone with his sense of humour. He wrote that Kalabhavan’s demise was a personal loss to him. According to the Jana Gana Mana actor, his every day started by listening to Kalabhavan’s jokes on their WhatsApp group. “I still can’t believe the fact that the person whose heart was full of love and happiness the moment I saw him has left this world”, Suraj wrote. Suraj ended the note by writing,” Tributes to my dear friend who gave me so many laughs…Hanifaika.”

Kalabhavan made his acting debut with the 1991 film Cheppu Kilukkana Changathi. He acted in more than 150 Malayalam films. As per the Times of India, Kalabhavan was undergoing treatment for respiratory disease. The portal further reported that he was admitted for over a week in a private hospital in Ernakulam. Kalabhavan is survived by his wife Wahida and children Sithara Haneef and Shahrukh Haneef. He hailed from Mattancherry near Kochi and entered Malayalam cinema with his mimicry performances. He was a member of Kalabhavan, the popular performance troupe. This troupe has played a key role in popularising the art form of mimicry in Kerala.

Kalabhavan last acted in the Jaladhara Pumpset Since 1962 which was released on August 11, 2023. Wonderframes Filmland has produced this film. Althaf Salim, Urvashi, Johny Antony, Indrans, Sanusha, Vijayaraghavan, TG Ravi, and others also acted in this film. Ashish Chinnappa has directed this film. It received accolades from both audience and critics.
