The prestigious MTV Movie & TV Awards ceremony which usually takes place around this time of year will not be held in 2024. The ceremony aims to cover a wide genre of shows, films, series produced every year and present the award to the most deserving ones. But, the popular network plans to return to the awards night next year with a “reimagined” version, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Moreover, MTV has offered no official reason for the sudden halt this year.
As per the publication, this is the third time in five years that the ceremony has been significantly altered or cancelled entirely. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, MTV chose not to hold a ceremony in 2020, instead aired a MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special hosted by Vanessa Hudgens. Next, in 2023, the ceremony was turned into a pre-taped clip show because host Drew Barrymore backed out in sympathy with the WGA strike and several expected guests cancelled. As a result, many winners accepted their trophies at home.

The awards ceremony, which started in 1992 and was formerly known as the MTV Movie Awards, over the years, has been hosted by Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Mike Myers, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne Johnson, and Kevin Hart, among others. The network began honouring television shows in 2017. That year, the name was changed to MTV Movie & TV Awards. As per Variety, that same year, the network became gender-neutral, welcoming the option to combine male and female performers into a single category. Later, movie and television contenders were combined in many of the categories.
Last year, Scream VI was named the best movie, and The Last of Us was named the best show. Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick for best performance in a film. Jenna Ortega on Wednesday for the best performance in a show. Adam Sandler in Murder Mystery 2 won for best comedic performance, Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us for best hero, and much more. For the unscripted, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me won for best music documentary; The Kardashians for best docu-reality show; and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars was awarded for best competition series, among others.
