Devadoothan sent cine-goers down the nostalgic path and struck a chord with the audience.
One of the classic Malayalam films is Devadoothan, headlined by Mohanlal and Jaya Prada. Released in 2000, the film underperformed at the box office, but received critical acclaim. Over the years it achieved a cult status and the mass showered it with love. The film won three Kerala State Film Awards, including Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value, Best Music Director and Best Costume Designer. Recently, the film’s digitally remastered 4k Dolby Atmos Director’s Cut was released on July 26, 2024, and has now emerged as a commercial success after the re-release. The 4k Dolby Atmos remastering brought new life to the film and has now become a huge success at the box office. Recently, the film completed 50 days at the box office after its re-release and the makers decided to celebrate the milestone achieved. Taking to social media, the makers dropped a post with the caption, “50 golden days that rewrote history. Pure Cinematic Bliss: The Magical Journey Continues. Don’t miss Devadoothan In 4k Dolby Atmos, Running Successfully In Theatres.”
The film is directed by Sibi Malayil. Apart from Mohanlal and Jaya Prada, it also featured Vijayalakshmi, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Murali, Sarath Das and Vineeth Kumar in crucial roles. The film is scripted by Raghunath Paleri. It narrates the story of Vishal Krishnamoorthy, an award-winning musician who returned to his alma mater to direct a musical. Years ago, he was expelled from his college for allegedly playing a protected musical instrument, Seven Bells. Vishal claimed that the instrument was played by itself. The film has a great plot with horror and melodious music intertwined in harmony. Vishal decided to solve the mystery of the Seven Bells that will uncover long-buried secrets which have links to his own life and music. Devadoothan was produced by Siyad Koker under the banner of Koker Films. The cinematography was done by Santosh Thundiyil while Vidyasagar composed the music.
Previously, in 2023, Mohanlal’s Spadikam, helmed by Bhadran was re-released in the theatres which received a great response from movie-goers. Now with a positive response from the crowd after the re-release of Devadoothan, his another iconic film from 1993, Manichithrathazhu, is set for a re-release as well.
