Mohanlal made his first public appearance after resigning as the President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). The actor attended the launch ceremony of Kerala Cricket League. The Malayalam superstar was seen sporting a formal look. Mohanlal did not commented about the growing sexual harassment cases that has taken the Kerala film industry by storm at the time of reporting.
In the video shared on YouTube, Mohanlal was seen maintaining a low profile before he took on the centre stage. The event took place in Thiruvananthapuram. Watch the video below:
Mohanlal stepped down as the President of AMMA earlier this week amid the new wave of MeToo movement in the Malayalam film industry. He had a 17-member executive committee, who also followed his lead and stepped down as from the association.
Mohanlal as well as the committee members issued a joint statement about their exit. “AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement read.
Popular Malayalam news publication, Manorama, claimed that Mohanlal held a private consultation with Mammootty. The report also claimed that Mammootty ‘supported’ his decision. Mammootty allegedly agreed that it was the ‘best course of action.’ The report also claimed that there were attempts made to urge Mohanlal to reconsider his decision but the actor was unwilling to budge. couldn’t verify the claims at the time of reporting.
Mohanlal has not commented on the growing sexual harassment cases in the Kerala film industry yet. His silence has not gone down well with his female co-stars. Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has lashed out at his and the committee’s decision to step down. “The first reaction I had when I heard the news about this collective resignation was, ‘how cowardly.’ How cowardly of them to step away from a position where they are accountable to speak to the media. That’s an immediate cop-out. With this, the onus has again fallen on women to take the conversations and debates forward. It would have been amazing if they had shown at least the intention to work with the state government and stakeholders to figure a way out,” Parvathy told journalist Barkha Dutt on her YouTube channel.
However, Revathi is giving Mohanlal a benefit of doubt, suggesting that the superstar must also be shocked by the cases and reports.
