Mission: Impossible 8 will be released on May 23, 2025.

The main reason behind the delay is reported to be the production halt owing to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise’s upcoming Mission: Impossible is getting delayed. The eighth and final offering of the film franchise won’t hit theatres until 2025. Originally, the movie was set to release on June 28, 2024, but Paramount Pictures has now postponed the movie by a year, as per Variety. The main reason behind the delay is reported to be the production halt owing to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. In addition to this, Mission: Impossible 8 will arrive on the big screen with a brand new name. After the massive success of Mission: Mission – Fallout, the sixth installment that hit the theatres in 2018, Paramount Studios charted out the franchise’s immediate future. Prolific filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie was brought back to direct two sequels.

Initially, the plan entailed Tom Cruise’s return as Ethan Hunt to be back-to-back. After the shooting of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the production of Part Two was to hit the floors immediately. But now the release date is moved to May 23, 2025. The studio is also likely to drop the second half of the sequel’s title Dead Reckoning Part Two. Though the new moniker of Mission: Impossible 8 remains unknown, the sequel will follow the events of its predecessor film.

The seventh installment of the franchise accumulated positive reviews from fans and critics alike, but its box office performance likely fell short. For those unaware, Part One landed in the cinema houses just before the global release of Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. But this won’t be the case for the final Mission: Impossible film as it will reportedly get a three-week exclusive Imax run.

Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One ending left audiences with a cliffhanger teasing a big death in the sequel film. With Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, actors release. Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, and Hayley Atwell among others are all likely to reprise their roles in the final movie.

Meanwhile, the crippling strike between AG-AFTRA and Hollywood studios that began on July 14 has already marked its 100-day run. Negotiations are taking place over complex issues including the use of artificial intelligence and compensation for streamed content. The demands of SAG-AFTRA include pay increases, improved facilities for health and retirement benefits, protections against the use of artificial intelligence, and improvised contracts.
