The Maruti XL6 was launched in 2019 as a more upmarket alternative to the tried-and-tested Ertiga. This six-seater MPV, which features individual captain’s chairs in the middle row, is practical, fuel-efficient and easy to drive, making it a compelling used option for a family car buyer. But there are a few things to note before you decide to buy one.

Design-wise, the XL6 is very similar to the standard Ertiga. However, it does feature a larger front grille with chrome detailing, LED headlamps, different bumpers, faux skid plates, blacked-out 15-inch alloys and mirror caps, roof rails and plastic cladding.

Maruti Suzuki XL6 powertrain options

Like the Ertiga, the XL6 is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that puts out 105hp and 138Nm of torque and comes with Maruti’s SHVS mild-hybrid technology, which aids fuel efficiency. It comes paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Claimed fuel efficiency figures stand at 19.01kpl for the manual and 17.99kpl for the automatic.

The XL6 is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and it also comes with a CNG option.

As for which one you should opt for, if fuel efficiency and long road trips are your priority, it’s the manual you should look at. If your usage will be city-based and you want that added convenience, it’s worth going for the automatic. The XL6, like the Ertiga, is an easy-to-drive car thanks to its light controls and relatively compact dimensions.

It’s worth noting that Maruti also introduced the new 1.5-litre DualJet engine to the XL6 with the facelift in 2022, and it gained a new 6-speed automatic gearbox. Along with this, the facelift also brought in some cosmetic tweaks, feature additions and a CNG powertrain option down the line.

Maruti Suzuki XL6 trims and features

The Maruti XL6 was launched in just two trims – Zeta and Alpha. In terms of equipment, both XL6 variants get a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, rear air-con vents, LED DRLs, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, cruise control and height adjust for the driver’s seat.

The top-spec Alpha additionally gets automatic headlamps and a rear parking camera. Standard safety equipment consists of dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and seat-belt reminders for the driver and front passenger. As both trims are well-equipped, you can’t go wrong with either. However, it’s advisable to go for the top-spec Alpha as the rear view camera is very handy.

Being a Maruti Suzuki product, the XL6 has proven to be a mechanically reliable vehicle and easy to maintain as well. Spare parts are affordable and available readily and Maruti’s service network is also the most widespread throughout the country. It’s also worth going for an example that has an extended warranty package as it’ll offer you that extra peace of mind. Furthermore, the XL6 also has great resale value so you’ll be able to recoup a considerable amount of your investment when you sell it later on.

What to look out for in a used Maruti Suzuki XL6?

Interior rattles

Some owners have complained about certain interior panels rattling as the car ages. On a test drive, go through a rough patch of road and listen out for any rattles emerging from the door cards or from behind the dashboard.

Touchscreen

The XL6 is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and it also comes with a CNG option.

The XL6 packs in Maruti’s SmartPlay Studio infotainment touchscreen and while it’s easy to use and slick enough, it’s known to glitch and crash on occasion. Before buying, ensure the screen functions smoothly and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay works seamlessly.

Suspension wear

Since it’s a family car, it’s bound to be subjected to heavy loads from time to time. Hence, it’s also worth checking out the suspension. Listen for any noises that come from the suspension, or notice if it crashes excessively over bumps and ruts, as these are signs of worn-out bushes.

Also worth knowing

Maruti Suzuki issued a recall for the XL6 in the past, which affected 1.80 lakh vehicles. Models manufactured between May 4, 2018 and October 27, 2020 were recalled to inspect a suspected faulty motor generator unit. If found faulty, the component was replaced free of cost. If you are looking at an example that’s manufactured in this period, ensure this has been taken care of.

Second-hand Maruti Suzuki XL6 price and resale value

Being a Maruti, the XL6 still commands a good resale value. However, don’t spend over Rs 9 lakh, especially for a pre-facelift model. Dealers and owners are asking for high prices currently, but there is scope for negotiation as the XL6 isn’t as popular as its sibling, the Ertiga.
