Maruti Suzuki Celerio manual real-world fuel efficiency tested, explained

The second-generation Maruti Celerio wears the title of being the most fuel-efficient car in India, with an ARAI rating of 26.68kpl for the AMT version and 25.24kpl for its manual iteration. We put the manual through our test cycles to find out how much it delivers in the real world.

  • Maruti Celerio AMT’s ARAI figure is 26.68kpl
  • Maruti Celerio manual’s ARAI figure is 25.24kpl
  • Manual gearbox version weighs just 820kg

What is the real world fuel efficiency of the Maruti Celerio manual?

With Maruti’s 1.0 petrol engine’s core focus being fuel efficiency – and with an automatic stop-start feature to keep a check on fuel consumption in stop-go scenarios – the new Celerio with a 5-speed manual transmission returns 14.5kpl within urban confines.

For the open roads, the Celerio gets a tall fifth gear. To put it into perspective, while cruising at 100kph in fifth gear, the engine is spinning at just 2,700rpm. That, coupled with a mere 820kg weight, helps it deliver 21kpl on the highway, which is the highest among the petrol-only cars we have tested of late.

Autocar India’s fuel efficiency testing

Before our real-world fuel efficiency test, we fill the tanks of our test cars to the brim and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. These cars are driven in fixed city and highway loops and we maintain certain average speeds. Throughout our test, there is only one person in each car, running the air con and other electricals like the audio system, indicators and wipers when required, just like how a regular user would. Periodic driver swaps further neutralise variations in driver patterns. At the end of each cycle, we calculate efficiency by tanking them up till the brim. We take pride in our testing data, which isn’t merely consistent, but also gives users an accurate indication of what they can expect in the real world.
