Margot Robbie revealed that she was asked to shift the release dates in order to avoid the clash with Oppenheimer.
Margot Robbie was quite the star of the year with her latest film Barbie, which took Hollywood by storm and painted the town pink. Barbie was a one-of-a kind concept and was released on July 21, the same day as the much-anticipated Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy. Although Margot Robbie’s film faced stiff competition, it managed to get a record-breaking response. In the latest Actors to Actors conversation by Variety, the actress revealed that she was asked to “shift the release dates in order to avoid this clash.”
Margot Robbie said during the chat, “One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me, because we worked together on some other projects. And he was like, ‘I think you guys should move your date.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving our date. If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date.’ And he’s like, ‘We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.’” However, the actress was adamant. During the discussion, Robbie stated that she always thought Oppenheimer and Barbie were a “really great pairing,” which is why she didn’t want to push back the release date.
Margot added, “It’s a perfect double billing…Clearly the world agreed. Thank God.” Barbie became Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing release, earning about $1.4 billion worldwide, and Oppenheimer was the highest-grossing biopic of all time, grossing $950 million worldwide.
Margot Robbie was also quite fascinated by how the audience appreciated both films equally. Many watched both films simultaneously. Apart from that, the actress shared another reason why she thinks both films did well despite the tense competition. The actress said, “I think they were also really excited by the filmmakers. People were itching for the next Chris Nolan film and itching for the next Greta Gerwig film. To get them at the same time was exciting.”
On the other hand, Cillian Murphy said that both films worked well since they were “good”. He added, “In fact, that summer, there was a huge diversity of stuff in the cinema, and I think it just connected in a way that you or I or the studios or anybody could never have predicted.”
Barbie narrated the story of the world’s most popular doll, who embarks on a journey to recover from an existential crisis. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who oversaw the development of the atomic bomb.
