Mahindra Scorpio-N to be unveiled on June 27; price announcement later

New Mahindra Scorpio-N (Z101) will be positioned above the current Scorpio SUV which will continue to be on sale.

Mahindra has announced that its upcoming Z101 SUV, which was earlier touted to be the next-gen Scorpio, will be christened Mahindra Scorpio-N. A global debut for the new Mahindra Scorpio-N SUV will take place on June 27 and price announcement is likely to follow thereafter.

  • Mahindra Z101 SUV christened Scorpio-N
  • Will sit on a ladder-frame platform
  • Expected to come with petrol and diesel engine options

Contrary to earlier reports about a June 20 unveil, the brand has officially confirmed that June 27 will be the global debut of the new Z101 SUV from Mahindra.  Mahindra has been testing the new Scorpio-N for over two years in testing with numerous sightings, and was recently revealed in full via leaked photos.

The new Scorpio-N will be positioned above the current Scorpio and slightly below the popular XUV700. Some variants of the new Scorpio-N could overlap higher trims of the current Scorpio and lower to mid-variants of the XUV700. With the new Scorpio-N, Mahindra would have another ladder-frame based SUV in its line-up that also includes the Thar, the Scorpio, the Bolero, and Bolero Neo.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: to get fresh yet familiar looks

Touted as a spiritual successor to the Scorpio without replacing it, the new Scorpio-N gets a completely new design that unmistakably looks like a new-generation of the Scorpio. There are many design details on the new Scorpio-N that resemble the original SUV, and it also seems to have grown in terms of dimensions. For more details on the Scorpio-N’s styling, you can refer to our story here.

The Scorpio-N’s interior, as seen from earlier spy shots, will be a mix of plush materials and rugged bits. The SUV will get a large touchscreen taking centerstage on the dashboard, the unit wont be as big as the one seen on the XUV700. Higher variants will also come with a digital instrument cluster. The switchgear will be shared with some of the newer Mahindra models like the Marazzo, XUV700 and the Thar. You can reach more about the Scorpio-N’s interior here.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: expected engine, gearbox, 4WD options

Under the hood, the new Scorpio-N is expected to be powered by the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines which are already on duty on XUV700 and Thar. The Scorpio’s power outputs are expected to be closer to the Thar’s than the XUV700, and the diesel engine will likely be available in two specs of tune. Gearbox options will include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic, with four-wheel drive likely to be offered on some variants along with off-road driving modes.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: rivals

Where there won’t be  any direct rival to the Scorpio, thanks to its ladder-frame construction. We expect customers looking at the Tata Harrier, MG Hector Plus and Hyundai Alcazar and even the XUV700 to also consider the Scorpio-N as an alternative for their next SUV purchase.

Expect more details on the Scorpio-N to be revealed in the coming days as we head closer to its June 27, 2022 global debut.
