Love to Add Ghee in Every Meal? Nutritionist Explains Why it’s not a Wise Choice


It is impossible to imagine an Indian kitchen without ghee. Even the simplest dish like dal is prepared with ghee tadka. Until and unless we do not grease our chapatis in ghee, we find it to be flavourless. Over the years, the desi ghee has earned its reputation being the healthiest available product out there. And while various fitness experts may claim it to be loaded with nutrients, clinical nutritionist Avantii Deshpande does not completely agree with it. On Instagram, the nutritionist dropped a video wherein she explained why ghee must not be added to each and every dish.


In a long note along with the video, Avantii revealed that ghee is a saturated fat that increases the LDL cholesterol in our body, which is not healthy for the heart if consumed excessively. Beginning her caption by asking, “Do you include ghee in each and every dish as a necessary fat?” Avantii wrote, “Moreover ghee being a saturated fat increases the total and LDL cholesterol which in turn is not good for the heart if consumed in excess.” While explaining that one must replace ghee with products that are loaded with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, she explained why one must consume these alternative items.

She wrote, “Along with saturated fats, monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) must be consumed in moderation as they are considered heart-healthy and also provide many health benefits.” She also mentioned a few healthy substitutes that can be used to replace ghee while cooking. She said, “Include groundnut, sesame seed, mustard, and olive oils that are rich in MUFA whereas sunflower, soyabean, and sunflower oil contain PUFA in large amounts.” She concluded by saying that instead of cooking in ghee one can add it in dal, rice, and chapati in order to maintain the right levels of fat in your body.
