List includes painkillers, antibiotics, cardiac drugs: Prices of essential medicines to rise from April 1

According to a statement made on Monday by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the change in the WPI index will amount to 12.12% in the year 2022.

A number of essential medicines are expected to increase in price starting in April, a further setback caused by inflation. Antibiotics, anti-infectives, painkillers, and cardiac medications are among these. From next month, prices for 384 molecules, which make up about 900 formulations in 27 therapies, are expected to rise by 12%.

The annual change in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) is expected to give pharmaceutical companies permission to raise prices. According to a Times of India report, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) stated on Monday that the change in the WPI index will amount to 12.12 percent in the year 2022.

Scheduled drugs are included on the national list of essential medicines and are expected to increase in price. The prices of these necessary medications are governed by the NPPA.

Non-scheduled drug prices, on the other hand, are permitted to rise by 10% annually. According to sources cited by TOI, the ceiling prices for the scheduled medicines will be announced in the coming days.
