Karnataka IT minister meets US envoy to discuss collaboration in anti-narcotics

Senior US government officials met with Karnataka IT minister C N Ashwath Narayan on Monday to deliberate on new avenues in anti-narcotics initiatives and manufacturing of medicines.

The state government will share best practices for monitoring the use of unregulated chemicals in drug manufacturing, Narayan said after meeting with Rahul Gupta, director of White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), on Monday.

Collaborative engagements in the areas of enforcement, regulatory frameworks, transparency through effective IT systems, and building of robust frameworks for the growth of the pharmaceutical industry were discussed at the meeting.

This comes in the backdrop of firms globally pursuing ‘China+1’ strategy to reduce dependence on China for drugs and other products for the US and other markets.

“India and the US are already working on bolstering the India-US counter-narcotics agreement as India assumes G20 presidency from December this year,” Narayan said after the talks.

The Karnataka government is exploring partnerships with the US to continue to strengthen this dialogue, he said. “We look forward to interacting (further) with the White House and delegates from the US soon,” said Narayan who is also the minister for science and technology, higher education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and livelihood.
