Julia Roberts said that she is still interested in revisiting the characters Jules, Michael, and Kimmy in a follow-up to My Best Friend’s Wedding.
In a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Julia Roberts, the Academy Award-winning actress, was posed with an intriguing question from a viewer: Which of her movies would she love to see a sequel for? The question prompted a thoughtful response from the 56-year-old actress, who, after a moment of contemplation, expressed her desire for a sequel to the 1997 romantic comedy, My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Directed by P.J. Hogan, the film gained global popularity for its humorous take on the complexities of love and friendship. Roberts, reflecting on the question, acknowledged that she had never been asked this particular query before. My Best Friend’s Wedding, released in June 1997, showcased Roberts in the role of Jules, a food journalist who realises her love for her longtime best friend, Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney), just as he announces his engagement to Kimmy (portrayed by Cameron Diaz). The story further deals with Jules attempting to thwart the impending wedding over four days, resorting even to a fake engagement with her gay best friend, George (played by Rupert Everett).
However, those who have watched the film might know that Michael all does not go well with Jules after all.
Roberts highlighted the richness of the characters and their dynamics, suggesting ample material for a potential sequel. The actress expressed her curiosity about the lives of the characters, especially the trajectory of Kimmy and Michael’s marriage, hinting at the potential for engaging narratives.
During the show, a viewer inquired about who Roberts believed Michael should have chosen in the film. Roberts stuck with her character said, “Well, I mean, of course, Jules. But he married Kimmy!”
Interestingly, Roberts isn’t the sole advocate for a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. Dermot Mulroney, who portrayed Michael, voiced his openness to revisiting the character during an appearance on The Talk in November 2018.
The cast, including Roberts and Mulroney, had reunited in 2019 for Entertainment Weekly’s romantic comedy issue. During this reunion, they talked about the filming experience and speculated on the current whereabouts of their characters. Roberts playfully suggested that Jules, the wedding saboteur, might have evolved into a marriage counsellor.
Reflecting on the film’s success and legacy during an interview with E! Daily Pop, Roberts underscored the serendipity of the cast coming together. Despite being strangers before the movie, the chemistry among the actors was palpable, leading to enduring friendships. Roberts particularly highlighted her ongoing strong friendship with Dermot Mulroney, talking about the positive experience they shared while making the film.
