Jaydeep Sarkar on Rainbow Rishta.

Jaydeep Sarkar opened up about working on Rainbow Rishta, what it is to be a good ally and more.

If I had to sum up Rainbow Rishta in one line, I would call this show a must watch! The docu-series features Queer people from different walks of life and puts a spotlight on the daily struggles that people from the LGBTQiA+ community face. The series has received much praise from critics and viewers. Days after the series released on Amazon Prime Video, creator Jaydeep Sarkar opened up about working on the show in an emotional chat with Showsha.

The creator said that while he was making the series and post its release, he has only received support from his partner, friends and their families. “When I was making it, I was very lucky to have a supportive partner, my partner’s family, my family’s very supportive friends, and everyone. So I think everyone was cheering from the beginning itself. The reaction… we (the cast and the fellow makers) have all been calling each other crying. We didn’t expect this reaction. Honestly, we did not expect people to call choking and not being able to react. We felt a little bit of this on the premiere night I think when people were walking up to us, and I’m still fathoming the reaction,” he said.

If you haven’t watched the series yet, Rainbow Rishta stars Trinetra Haldar, Aishwarya Ayushmaan, Daniella Mendonca, Aneez Saikia, Sanam Choudhary, Soham Sengupta, Suresh Ramdas, and Sadam Hanjabam. In the series, audiences get to see Daniella Mendonca’s wedding with Joel. Jaydeep confessed that the wedding was emotional for him.

Fighting back his tears, the creator said, “Daniela’s wedding was very emotional for all of us. Hridaye Nagpal three of the other stories — Trinetra, Aneez and Saddam. He his entire team, we were all there. It was our sister’s wedding. It was so emotional for us. It is unbelievable what magic happened and the love we received from the cast, from the family… I remember you shooting in Bangalore with today. Her mother had made the most beautiful Ilish maach. I’m a Bengali, I lost my parents a few years ago, and every time aunty in Danielle’s house, or Trinetra’s parents, every time they would feed us. It was a very, very, very emotional… This show has been so giving, it’s been so giving.”

While Rainbow Rishta has put a realistic and beautiful light on the Queer community, we asked Jaydeep what he feels one should do to be a better ally. The filmmaker said, “People should also educate themselves. It’s upon them. I am done explaining my existence. You do your homework now, please.”

“I was having a very interesting conversation about the problem of the word ally ship, it ‘others’ us. It kind of makes us feel like (different). You just have to be empathetic, we are all people. Everyone’s not wearing the labels when we meet. So ally ship kind of others us and that othering is actually reflecting in a lot of the pieces that I read (about Rainbow Rishta). And while a lot of the pieces are glowing, but there is a tone of ‘look at the gays, this is how they live.’ It’s just terrible. ‘What a beautiful show about how the gays live,’ (read a line). There’s a lot of homework that the street population has to do,” he said.
