Javed Akhtar shared that Farah Khan wanted him to write meaningless lyrics for the Om Shanti Om song ‘Dard-E-Disco’.
Farah Khan’s most iconic film, Om Shanti Om will be completing 16 years next month on November 9. The film not only introduced Deepika Padukone and became a cult classic, but it also showed us, Shah Rukh Khan, in a way we never saw before. Yes, we are talking about the song Dard-E-Disco where SRK set the screens on fire with his chiselled six-pack abs. While we have heard many anecdotes about the shooting of that song, Javed Akhtar gave another interesting trivia about how Farah Khan wanted him to write ‘meaningless lyrics’ for the song.
In a free-flowing conversation with Cyrus Broacha, Javed Akhtar recalled, “If you are asked to write ‘meaningless,’ it’s a challenge. If you ask somebody to stand up here and speak for 2 minutes, there shouldn’t be any sense, although many times it happens, but it does not happen on a conscious level. It doesn’t happen on a conscious level. The moment you are aware that you have to speak gibberish, you start speaking sense. This was a situation where the hero in the film is in a wheelchair.”
“The director of the film, Farah told me that ‘Javed uncle I want a song in which any line does not have meaning because the whole situation is absurd.’ I realized for the first time that to write gibberish is very difficult. I’m happy that it was fairly meaningless,” he further added.
Om Shanti Om marked the debut of Deepika Padukone, as she was paired opposite the Baadshah of Bollywood- Shah Rukh Khan. An ode to the 70’s cinema, the movie had everything, from sass to drama, style, and cameos by the who’s who of Bollywood. Direced by Farah Khan, it also starred Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher and Arjun Rampal in pivotal roles among others. The film continues to enjoy a cult-status till today.
