Jada Pinkett Smith revisited Will Smith’s Oscar slapgate in a new interview. At the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock.
Jada Pinkett Smith reflected upon Will Smith’s Oscar slapgate and said that the slap saved their marriage. In a new interview, the actress dubbed the slap ‘holy’ and said it changed the course her relationship with Will. For the unversed, at the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for his comment about Jada Pinkett Smith on stage. The moment caused an uproar and Will was banned by the Academy for 10 years. Will had issued a statement about the incident, apologising to the Academy and has been spotlight since.
Speaking with Daily Mail, Jada opened up about the shocking slap. “After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him,” she said, months after revealing that she and Will have been separated for seven years now. “Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?” she added.
“I call it the ‘holy slap’ now because so many positive things came after it,” she said, adding that she is glad to have witnessed the incident play out in person. “That moment of the s–t hitting the fan is when you see where you really are,” she added. Her new statement comes also amid reports that Will Smith was spotted with a mystery woman over the weekend.
Jada had addressed the incident in an interview with CBS Mornings last month as well. “I might not have walked in there as his wife but I left that night as his wife. And as I sit here today, I am going to be by his side always,” she said, addressing the slapgate.
Back in October, Jada confessed she thought the slap was a skit. “I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit,” she said, speaking with People.
