IT Ministry holds brainstorming session with startups on AI, language technology

New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Tuesday organised a brainstorming session with more than 80 startups and other researchers to discuss India’s strategy in the field of Artificial Intelligence and language technology.

The meeting was chaired by Minister of State for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The new initiative, named Digital India BHASHINI or BHASHa INterface for India- is a part of the National Language Translation Mission.

The mission aims to ensure that as more Indians connect to the internet, they are able to access global content in their own langauges, Chandrasekhar said.

“Startups are an important part of our Digital ecosystem and will be supported for developing India-specific and Indian Languages enabled IT solutions through Mission Digital India Bhashini,” he said.

The Economic Times had in 2019 reported that the government planned to fund 100 startups which used its AI-driven platform to provide translation services across the country. IT ministry officials had then said that the platform would be opened up for private use to allow big companies or startups to plug into it to offer services in local languages to their customers.
