IT Industry cheers WFH rules relaxation for SEZs till next December

Wipro chairman Rishad Premji welcomed the commerce ministry’s decision to relax work from home norms for Special Economic Zones on Thursday and called the move as a “critical and progressive approach to the future of work”.

“It only further strengthens the India tech story,” he added on Twitter.

“Thank you to the Govt of India for this critical and progressive approach to the future of work. It only further strengthens the India tech story,” Premji said on Twitter.

Tech Mahindra managing director CP Gurnani also said the hybridwork model will ensure the best of talent and the best of tech for the IT-BPM industry for India and their global customers, he said through his Twitter account.
The Indian government on Thursday allowed complete work from home option to employees of IT units in a special economic zone till December 2023.

The change seeking to just send an email to avail the WFH option and not the list of employees working from home brings much needed relief, the industry experts said.

“This furthers our efforts to provide flexibility and omni-connected experiences to our people and bring in diverse talent pools for India to emerge as a global hub for digital talent,” said Rekha Menon, chairperson and senior managing director of Accenture in India.

The commerce and industry ministry has notified key changes to the rule 43A of the SEZ Rules, 2006, permitted units seeking WFH in future to email an intimation on or before the date of commencement of WFH.

Nasscom in a tweet termed it as a major step towards ease of doing business. “In a major step to enable the IT BPM industry in SEZ to operate in a flexible hybrid work model, the @DoC-GoI has today simplified the rules. This will enable the hybrid model to stabilise and evolve over the next year,” it said.
